Happy New Year to all our neighbours and friends from the Alpujarras and beyond!

The “Di No a las Torres en la Alpujarra” platform is starting up again.

It’s a year now since this citizens’ group was set up to campaign against the high tension pylons, against the danger posed by REE’s planned “corridor” to pass through our region. Carrying this out, a megaproject of enormous towers, would result in a huge deterioration in our countryside, economy and health.

At our last public information meeting we said how the Environment Delegation in Granada had decided to cancel the project, to the delight and relief of all. Weeks later REE appealed against the decision to the Junta de Andalucía and to continue the project as before. This appeal is still in progress.

Throughout its first year of activity the platform has been meeting every Tuesday in the townhall and we’ve carried out political interviews with

• Local mayors (Orgiva, Lanjaron …)
• The Government Sub-delegation
• The Government Delegation
• The Environment Delegation

And more recently with the Managing Director of the Agencia Andaluza de la Energía de la Junta de Andalucía in Seville. At that meeting there were three members of the platform along with Orgiva’s mayor and councillor for the environment.

The platform has also run various public meetings during its first year and has organised one or two fundraising events along with information tables on a number of occasions. Various local demonstrations have been organised and a mass demonstration in Granada of high impact that many of you will recall with emotion.

One of the biggest advances of this platform was collection of signatures and individualised objections, collectively against this REE project.

We want, then, to thank all of you for your participation and help up until now, whether financial, attendance, one-off, continuing …

In the same way, the platform continues inviting you to participate when possible as there is still much to do to protect our Alpujarra, our beautiful region.
